Legendary R&B singer and Tulsa Native Charlie Wilson just celebrated a major career milestone with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Charlie Wilson got his start in Tulsa as the lead singer of The Gap Band, which stands for Greenwood, Archer and Pine.
Surrounded by other superstars like Snoop Dogg, Charlie Wilson watched the unveiling of his name embedded in the Hollywood Walk of Fame, on his 71st birthday no less.
"I remember the first time I laid eyes on the Walk of Fame, it was back in 1974."
Running a radio station in Tulsa, Bobby Eaton couldn't be prouder of his accomplishment.
"Man me and Charlie go back to childhood … We were so young in high school we were playing at night clubs, ya know entertaining our teachers and stuff like that," says Eaton.
He remembers looking at those stars with Wilson when he went with the GAP Band to Hollywood all those years ago looking for musical success.
"It's long overdue, but he finally goes there, those same streets that we would walk, ya know and look at those stars on the ground he's got one now," says Eaton.
The recognition is well deserved says Eaton, after some major hits like You Dropped a Bomb on Me, songs he still plays on his station today.
"It's in his blood, it's just in his blood to do this music he doesn't even know how to stop, it's just in him like that," says Eaton.
He says as a Tulsa native, Wilson shows young musicians in our city that anyone can make it from here.
"Still inspiring a whole lot of people," he says.
Wilson is still putting out new music, he just released a new song called Superman.
