Quapaw Nation Indicts 2 Former Leaders For Embezzlement, Corruption Charges

The Quapaw Nation has indicted two of its former leaders on embezzlement and corruption charges.

A special prosecutor charged former leader John Berrey and former Secretary Treasurer Tamara Smiley-Reeves with misappropriating more than $7 million in tribal funds.

Court documents said an audit revealed numerous inappropriate payments, gifts and expenses using tribal gaming money.

In a statement, Berry called the charges “made up” and “strictly political.”
